Printing, Scanning and Photocopying

Printing at our Libraries

Need to print something? Whether you’re using a library computer, your own device, or a USB stick, printing is quick and easy at all our libraries.

Acomb, Clifton, Haxby & Wigginton, Tang Hall and York

These libraries use the ePrintIt platform and have a self-service print kiosk.

  • Send your document to print using one of the methods below.
  • You will receive an 8-digit collection code.
  • Make a note of the code – you will need it to collect your printing.
  • Go to the self-service print kiosk, enter your code, pay, and collect your printout.
  • You can enter more than one code and pay for everything in one go.
  • Collection codes can be used at any Explore library print kiosk.
  • Collection codes expire after 72 hours.
How to use ePrintit
From a library Computer
  • Use the default printer ePrintIt to generate a collection code.
  • Make a note of the code and collect from the kiosk following the steps above.

A4 black and white is the default setting but you can change this in the print settings.

From your own device

Use the app, web portal or email to send your documents to print. The app or web portal is best if you want to print A3 or double-sided prints – these options are not available with email.

From a USB Stick
  • Plug your USB into the kiosk and select your PDF file.
  • No collection code needed.
  • Please note: encrypted or password-protected PDFs won’t work.

Gateway Libraries

At Gateway Libraries, printing is simple:

  • You can print in A4, in black and white or colour.
  • Print jobs come straight out of the printer, located at the reception desk.
  • Hand your payment to a member of staff—no kiosk or collection code needed.

Need Help?

If you’re not sure which printing method your library uses, just ask a member of staff. We’re always happy to help you get your documents printed quickly and easily.

Public Access Computers

All of our Explore centres and libraries have PCs (personal computers) available for you to use.

Using

To use one of our computers, you need to log on with your library card number and your library PIN. If you don’t know your PIN, a member of staff will be happy to look it up for you. For a small charge, we can provide guest access for visitors to York.

Members of the library can use our computers for free for up to two hours a day. You can split this allowance into more than one session, and sessions don’t have to be at the same library.

Booking

Members of the library can book computer sessions up to a week in advance, although booking is not compulsory.

Please use our booking webpage if you wish to book a session. You’ll need your library card number and PIN to log in. Alternatively you can book by speaking to library staff at any branch.

Software

The software available on the library PCs is:

  • Windows 10
  • MS Office 2021 (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher and Access)
  • Three browsers: Edge, Chrome, Firefox
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader
  • Paint.NET
  • Communicate in Print
  • Windows Accessibility tools including magnification and narration
  • Windows accessories including Paint 3D, Maps, Notepad, Calculator and Media Player

There are ports for headphones and for USB storage devices, should you wish to bring these when you visit.

Filtering

On the Wi-Fi and our public access PCs, you might find that some webpages have been blocked by our automatic filter. This is intended to block illegal or harmful sites, and not as a barrier to legitimate internet use. Payday loans websites are blocked as part of City of York Council’s anti-poverty strategy.

As with any automated system, mistakes can be made, so please let us know if you come across a site you think has been blocked in error.
