Acomb Explore is closed temporarily for redevelopment and will re-open on Monday 5 January 2026
We’re excited to announce that Acomb Explore Library will be undergoing a major refurbishment thanks to £390,000 of secured funding. This redevelopment will give the library a much-needed refresh while keeping the same footprint with no change to the garden or car park.
Alternative services while Acomb Explore is closed
Dringhouses Library will be open for extended hours from 13 October – 12 December 2025:
Monday: 9:30am – 12:30pm
Wednesday: 9:30am – 2:00pm
Friday: 9:30am – 12:30pm
This is in addition to Dringhouses normal opening hours which can be found here
The Mobile Library will visit Acomb on Mondays, 9am – 1pm, from 6 October – 15 December 2025 (please note there will be no visit on 13 October).
To help you plan your library visits, here are the key details:
How do I return my library books while you are closed?
Any books borrowed from Acomb from 9 September 2025 onwards will automatically be due back on 5 January 2026. You’re welcome to return books to any other Explore Library while Acomb is closed.
Can I reserve books from Acomb’s shelves while you are closed?
No – from 26 September 2025 you won’t be able to reserve books from Acomb. Reservations from Acomb’s shelves will be available again once we reopen in January. From 1 October you won’t be able to see Acomb’s books on the app or online catalogue.
Can I collect reservations from Acomb while you are closed?
No – from 1 September 2025, Acomb will no longer be available as a pick-up location. Please choose another Explore Library for your reservations until we re-open. If you have already reserved books to collect from Acomb before 1 September and they have not arrived, you will be contacted to discuss alternative arrangements.
What about groups and activities that usually meet at Acomb?
During the closure, Acomb groups will temporarily move to Dringhouses Library:
- Knits and Tots – Mondays at 9:30am
- Craft Group – Saturdays at 9:30am
- Stay and Play – Wednesdays at 10am
Other regular activities like Lego Club and Storytime are also available at Dringhouses Library.
Will the opening hours change when Acomb re-opens?
No – Acomb Explore will re-open with the same opening hours as before.
What about Betty, the library cat?
Don’t worry – Betty will be looked after by her family during the closure, and we’re confident she’ll return to her post when the library re-opens.
You’ll also have the chance to see the redevelopment plans, colour schemes and samples which will be on display at Dringhouses Library.

About Us
Drop-in, browse and borrow – you’re sure of a warm welcome!
We have a welcoming cafe serving a variety of food and drink.
You can use a PC. Please use our booking webpage to book a session. You’ll need your library card number and PIN to log in. Alternatively just give us a ring to book a session.
If you still love reading, but find it difficult to get to your local library, our Home Library Service offers you the chance to get the books that you love to read delivered straight to your door.

What’s on at Acomb Explore
All activities are free unless otherwise stated.
Knits and Tots Craft Group: Every Monday 10am-12pm drop-in.
Adult Lego Club: Every Tuesday 5.30pm – 7pm starts 19 February 2025
Stay and Play: Every Wednesday 10-11.30am. Enjoy playing with a selection of toys with your child in our children’s area. No need to book, just drop-in.
Under 5s Storytime: Every Tuesday and Thursday 10.30-11.00am. Drop-in for stories and rhymes.
Right to Read: Every Thursday 4pm- 5pm. Aimed at primary school children. Join York Cares volunteers and practise reading together in the café area. Each child may book onto a 20 minute session with a volunteer and there will be 3 sessions available. Please contact us for more details.
Scrabble Club: Every Thursday 5.30pm – 7pm
Reading Groups: We have two reading groups at Acomb. Last Tuesday of the month 6pm – 7pm and fourth Thursday of the month 11am–12pm. Please contact us for more details.
Boccia: Every Friday 2.00-3.00pm drop-in.
Lego Club: Every Saturday 10-11am Suitable for children 6-11 years. Cost is 50p per child, no need to book, just drop-in.
Adult Craft Club: Every Saturday 11.30am-1.30pm. No need to book, just drop-in.

Explore Computers: Every Tuesday 3.30-4.30pm. A one to one computer course for absolute beginners,
Explore the Internet: Every Thursday 3.30 -4.30pm. A five week computer course following on from Explore Computers.
Explore Tablets/Smartphones: Every Tuesday 5 – 6pm. A one to one course to help beginners to use their smartphone or tablet.
Tech Assist: Every Tuesday 2.30-3.30pm. A one to one session to help customers complete a specific task on-line.
