Incubator Micro Commissions

We are inviting local York-based artists to submit proposals for our Incubator Micro-Commissioning Programme. This programme supports small-scale creative activities that engage with the local community in Tang Hall and promote artistic expression.

Artists from all art forms and cross-art form practices are encouraged to apply, whether in visual arts, performing arts, digital media, or other creative disciplines.

We are looking for creative approaches to exploring and representing local histories, identities, and places.

We encourage proposals with participatory elements that foster collaboration and shared experiences between artists and the community.

However, activities can be artist-led, giving artists the flexibility to work independently on their projects or engage with community groups.

Relevant archive content about Tang Hall from Explore York’s significant archive collections, along with other resources, will be available to applicants to inspire and inform your proposal and activities. The use of these resources is optional.

Scale and Budget

Each commission offers a £750 fee plus a £150 materials budget* and is designed to be small-scale and manageable, allowing artists to plan and deliver their activities within a realistic timeframe and budget. Proposals should be creative but achievable within these constraints. All commissions will include monitoring and evaluation to be discussed with Explore York.

All commissions selected will take place or displayed at Tang Hall Explore.

*There is some flexibility in the materials budget depending on the scope of the proposed activities.

Completion Date

All activities must be completed by 31 March 2025.

Deadline for Applications

13 January 2025.

We will then provide you with a link to the short online application form, along with access to valuable resources, including archive materials and examples of past projects, to help inform your proposal and approach.
