We are pleased to announce that our Big City Read book for 2017 will be Helen Cadbury’s ‘To Catch a Rabbit’. Helen lives in York and is very involved in the cultural and literary life of the city and we are absolutely delighted that she has accepted our invitation to be our Big City Read author.

We are working hard on a fantastic programme of events and can already share some key dates with you.

  • The Big City Read 2017 brochure and event booking will be available from 1 August.
  • There will be a drop in day at York Explore on Saturday 5 August where you can pick up a brochure, book events and chat with some of the people responsible for creating the programme.
  • We will be launching the Big City Read on Thursday 14 September and distributing 5000 free copies of To Catch a Rabbit from 15 September.
  • Our programme of events across the city will run from 14 September to 10 November and we are already booking some fantastic authors and activities to involve, entertain and inform you.

Helen said “I am very excited about being part of Big City Read, and being able to share my debut novel, To Catch a Rabbit, with new readers across York. Writers write to be read, to share their ideas, their stories and their characters, so it’s wonderful to think of the book being given as a gift to people who have yet to discover it.  I am looking forward to finding out how new readers engage with the world I have created, and with crime fiction set in the region. I hope they will enjoy it; explore the next book in the series; or widen their reading habits with the multitude of other amazing authors out there.”

Fiona Williams Chief Executive for Explore York said, “We are thrilled to be working with Helen Cadbury and Allison and Busby for this year’s Big City Read. To Catch a Rabbit is not simply a crime novel, but it also examines both the complexity of human relationships and contemporary social issues in York and the wider world in 2017.”
